Often, companies say that they want innovation, while they keep doing the same things the same way. But sometimes it is not so difficult. All it takes is having no other choice but to innovate or fail.

David Epstein shares this surprising anecdote about how the Canadian olympic skeleton team was forced to innovate, and they revolutionized their sport in 1 hour.

Why the majority is always wrong

Most people stay stuck in predictable patterns because they keep doing what’s “normal” — what everyone else in their industry is already doing.

Paul Rulkens argues that extraordinary success doesn’t come from working harder, but from thinking differently and deliberately breaking outdated norms. Only about 3% of people are willing to do this — and they are the ones who achieve breakthrough results, while the rest end up working for them.

Ask yourself:

Are you achieving normal results because you’re following normal rules?
What if the biggest obstacle to your success is not outside you, but inside your thinking box?
If the majority is always wrong when it comes to high performance — are you willing to be in the minority?
What industry rule would you dare to break if you knew success depended on it?
Are you working toward innovation or just working harder at what already isn’t working?

This talk is very interesting and well delivered with, humour and skill, but we could argue that doing things completely different can lead to great success… or great failure. Watch out for the survivor bias!

The point here is to think originally, but then assess your ideas critically before you commit to them.
