Life is not a journey – Alan Watts

Last summer I made a trip from León to Boiro. According to google maps, it takes about 4 hours, but it took me 3 days because I chose to go offroad and explore the most beautiful and unconfortable paths I could find. It was not about the destination, but about the journey itself.

But… what does it have to do with people development? Well, I find that adventure is a great school of life. Whenever I ride, sail or do things that make me feel alive, I learn something if I pay attention. You need strategy and planning, mindfulness, flexibility, resource management, endurance, etc. It is fun, but also deeply meaningful.

And today I came across an interesting and timeless speech by the filosopher Alan Watts that gave words to my experience.

We spend our lives trying to be successful, to achieve goals, running after our commitments and activities, getting up early, doing a job that we may not like, studying, saving for months to reach a supposedly better future… that never arrives.

But… does life consist of going from point A to point B? What is the purpose of a song or a dance and how does it compare with life? Let’s listen to the interesting reflection.
