Top learning myths (that we all believed) debunked

Pedagogy is a controversial science. Or maybe it is an art. Anyway, those who develop other people should be careful about the models and ideas that we use or spread. An interesting or useful model is not always a scientific and proven theory.

I recognize that I’ve taught many «train the trainer», and often used some of the ideas about human learning that this video debunks. As always with science, take everything (both theories and their debunking) with a grain of salt. The key is to have critical thinking and debate about everything.

It is always healthy to review and critizice some ideas that I’ve also thought were more scientific and proven. Now I see some of them as plain wrong, others as oversimplified models that may be useful only in certain contexts and others as reasonable ideas not well proven.

However, according to my experience, there’s some common sense in some of them. For instance, active practice (not reading or listening passively) is one of the keys (not the only) to master whatever skill or acquire knowledge. Anyway, I think that it is vital for those who develop people to do it from a scientific approach.
