We usually talk about stable teams (as in sports, army or traditional companies), and work with them to improve their relationships and effectiveness.
But more and more often, teams are project-based, multicultural, with changing members, tasks and responsibilities, etc. They are more like commandos rather than traditional armies. So they can’t afford to spend long practising to become a team.
This talk by Amy Edmonson at Ted is interesting because it looks into what makes new teams fit together and get results as fast as possible. She takes the rescue of Chilean miners and analyzes some of the key factors that helped turn a group of heterogeneus unknown disorganized individuals into a team that achieved what seemed impossible.
